From Prototype to Small Batch Production: Supporting Product Development in Edinburgh

Bringing a product or idea into the world doesn’t always mean committing to thousands of units or working with large manufacturers. For many organisations, makers and creative teams, the challenge is finding a way to test concepts, develop prototypes or produce smaller quantities without compromising on quality.

Whether you’re developing a prototype, creating branded products or producing bespoke pieces for an event, Edinburgh Open Workshop helps clients move from concept to production at a scale that makes sense.

Why Small Batch Production Matters

Start-ups often need prototypes before committing to larger quantities. Established brands may want to test a new product range, while event organisers and independent makers frequently need low minimum order quantities that traditional manufacturers simply can’t offer.

Small batch production provides the flexibility to refine ideas, respond to demand and create products at a scale that makes sense, without compromising on quality or craftsmanship.

From Prototype to Production

Sometimes that starts with a sketch or an early concept. Sometimes it’s a fully developed design that simply needs the right tools and expertise to move it forward. Through Made@, Edinburgh Open Workshop supports clients at different stages of product development. We can help with:

  • Product prototyping, prototype development and design refinement
  • Material selection and fabrication advice
  • Laser cutting and CNC machining
  • Woodworking and metal fabrication
  • Finishing and assembly
  • Short production runs and small batch manufacturing

Because everything happens within a community workshop environment, clients benefit from access to a broad range of skills and expertise under one roof. The Made@ team helps solve design challenges, refine concepts and find practical routes from prototype to finished product.

Branded Products, Events and Activations

Small runs aren’t just useful for products. They can also help businesses and organisations create memorable experiences.

Made@ has worked with agencies, creative teams and independent brands to produce everything from personalised products and signage to bespoke installations, display elements and brand activation items for events and campaigns.

The ability to produce smaller quantities means clients can create pieces tailored to a particular audience, campaign or occasion without committing to large production volumes.

Examples of Our Work

Brand Activations

Over the last two years, Edinburgh Open Workshop has partnered with Powderkeg Productions to create bespoke brand activation items and display elements for campaigns involving Woven Whisky, Alchemast, Patrón, Takamaka and Bombay Sapphire. These projects showcase the breadth of work that can be achieved, from display elements and activations to custom fabrication for unique campaigns and events.

Small Product Runs

From leatherworkers, jewellers and architects creating personalised products and distinctive finishing touches, to small businesses producing clothing labels, our digital fabrication facilities make small product runs both practical and affordable.

By avoiding the high minimum orders often required by larger manufacturers, makers and businesses can produce quantities that reflect customer demand and grow at their own pace.

Bespoke Gifts and Merchandise

Members have also used the workshop to create collections of personalised gifts and branded merchandise, including batches of coasters, personalised beer caddies, trivets, router templates, necklaces and other custom items.

Why Work With Edinburgh Open Workshop?

At Edinburgh Open Workshop, we see ourselves as a making partner rather than simply a manufacturer. That means offering:

  • Low minimum order quantities
  • Support with product development and prototyping
  • Access to specialist tools and fabrication techniques
  • Flexibility for short production runs
  • Collaborative problem solving
  • A focus on quality, creativity and craftsmanship

For many clients, that combination makes it possible to develop products and ideas that might otherwise never progress beyond the drawing board.
