Learning BY EOW

To help choose the best course for you, we’ve tiered our courses into four levels:

Beginner | covers the basics of a skill/craft, and are practice oriented rather than project oriented (materials provided)

Novice | applies the basics of a skill/craft to a small, pre-designed project with hands on instruction provided by an instructor (materials provided)

Intermediate | offers development of a skill/craft around a customisable pre-designed project with guidance and support provided by an instructor (basic consumables provided, project materials purchased by student)

Advanced | encourages confidence of a skill/craft with a fully student designed project, with advice and support available by and instructor (all materials supplied entirely by student)

Funding Available

EOW runs a discretionary hardship fund – because we believe nothing should keep people from creating!

If you are in need of a concessionary rate, scholarship, or would like to start a payment plan for any of our courses or workshops, simply fill out the Bursary/Support Application form and we can help get you started.

MIXED MEDIA COURSES

INTUITIVE PRINT & QUILTING WORKSHOP

Join print artist, Katie Charleson, and learn the key techniques involved in screen printing textiles, sewing, and quilting all while upcycling fabric from your own home. Play with intuitive design as you decorate and embellish your old fabrics into a beautiful, abstract quilt or wall hanging made entirely by you! Katie will be on hand to give you tips and tricks of the trade and offer 1-2-1 advice specific to what you’d like to achieve, so you leave super inspired and ready to take your work to the next stage!

LEARN CANE WEAVING

Step into the world of traditional rattan cane weaving in this beginner-friendly workshop. Over the course of a day, you’ll learn the 6-strand weaving pattern found in the majority of caned furniture. This technique can be used to restore antiques or applied to new pieces of furniture. You’ll receive guidance as you weave your own practice frame which you can take home and hang on your wall! All necessary materials and tools will be provided.

WELDING COURSES

INTRODUCTION TO WELDING

The 2 day crash-course is designed to give the beginner a good grounding in welding theory and practice, typical welding joints and application. Lots of practical training using the MIG welding process, with overview of alternative systems such as TIG, Stick (arc) welding and Gas welding. The course takes you through various welding techniques, from preparation, though cutting, angle grinder use, safety to giving you the basic skills to be flexible and competent in building welded structures, whether artistic and decorative or repair based projects.

Ever wanted to try your hand at woodturning? Learn the basics of turning using a wood lathe while creating your own rolling pin or doorstop! Join Kirsty & Becka, the minds behind Fine Piece, and get an introduction to using a wood lathe and tools to turn a block of wood into beautiful hand turned shapes. Participants will leave with the skills to turn on the lathe independently as well as guidance on what their next project could be. All materials are included, no experience required.

Want to tackle your next home improvement project yourself? Join experienced carpenter & maker, Stuart Nairn, and learn how to use hand and power tools. This course is aimed at those keen to fix, build and finish small projects, and unearth the secrets of basic woodworking and repair for DIY. Learn how to make a set of shelves, and use wall plugs to fit them, and the importance of finding the right tool for the job. Participants will leave with their own handmade simple plywood toolbox, and the confidence to begin their own projects at home, and at EOW.

Ready for your first date with woodworking? Learn the basics of woodworking, as you practice your new skills on a simple box. This course is designed to be an introduction to woodworking for those that have always wanted to give it a try, and not had the time or space. Participants will get an introduction to using woodworking tools, carpentry techniques and gain skills and confidence in a workshop setting.

Got the basics, but still want to get a bit more under you belt before you tackle your first dining table/bookcase/coffee table? Join designer and furniture maker, Kirsty McKain, to grow your confidence and skills in woodworking. This course is a good transition for those wanting a little more practice before taking the Introduction to Fine Woodworking, or a bit more confidence before working on your own projects. Participants will learn about machining timber, bandsaw and hand routing techniques for your own charcuterie board, as well as carving a cheese knife and spoon.

LEARN HAND CUT DOVETAILS

Join fine furniture maker, Anna of Aln Furniture, to learn how to make a hand cut dovetail box. This course is designed for novice or beginner makers. You’ll be able to pick from two designs of box. Anna will provide you with a cutting list and a drawing. Timber will be provided to make your own box. You will have professional support from Anna to prepare your timber, and finally craft your box. At the end of the course, Anna is on hand to offer advice on your next project so that you can keep making even after the course has finished.

LEARN TO MAKE YOUR OWN FURNITURE

New to woodworking and keen to try your hand at making your own furniture? Designed for  novices, this course takes you through the beginning steps of furniture design and construction while working with designer/maker James of Birbeck’s Woodwork. Participants will work from a custom design to create a side table OR telephone table (each course has a project focus, please choose a course with your desired project) for your home and gain confidence around woodworking techniques, tools and machinery – all which you can use to plan your next project solo. All materials for the table are included.

Build a handmade stool with a carved seat based on simple, elegant Japanese design while working with fine furniture maker, Anna of Aln Furniture. This course is designed for beginners or those with a grip on the basics looking to improve their craft. Participants will learn basic furniture design, tool, and machine use, and traditional woodworking skills. At the end of the course, Anna is on hand to offer advice on your next project so that you can keep making even after the course has finished. All materials for the stool are included.

Build your own desk with a dovetail drawer with fine furniture maker, Anna of Aln Furniture. This course is for those who have completed Introduction to Fine Woodworking and are ready for the next stage of their journey. Participants will further develop woodworking skills through learning; mortise/tenons, selecting, ordering and machining timber, dovetail joints, and designing turned or tapered legs. While all designs are provided, there is still room to customise the design to make the desk your own!

Please note, materials are not included and will need to be purchased separately – guidance will be given on what type, and where is best to purchase.

Want private instruction or guidance? You can now request to book an individual tuition in welding, using a lathe, training on our CNC, laser cutter and any of our sewing machines.

Advanced Inductions: are aimed at those with little or no experience and who are looking for a individual training on a chosen machine (EG: lathe, sewing machines, CNC, laser cutter).

Private Courses: are aimed at those looking for individual learn a new skill/machine and a way to learn if you are interested in becoming an EOW member before purchasing a membership (EG: welding, 3D design, sewing).

*Additional materials fee may be charged dependent on machine use and practice material.

*Membership is still required for booking solo use of the space/machines.
