This course is aimed at those keen to fix, build and finish small projects, and unearth the secrets of basic woodworking and repair for DIY. Learn the basics of home improvement and small builds – from understanding what is you in your tool box, to making small plaster frames, hanging shelves, simple construction, and the importance of finding the right tool for the job. Participants will leave with their own handmade simple plywood toolbox, and the confidence to begin their own projects at home, and at EOW.

Get a start on building those basic skills in this concentrated, hands-on workshop that guides you through the correct process of wall hanging – including tool use and choosing the right fixture. From simple lightweight pictures to curtain rails, shelves and even wall mounts for hanging a TV. Beginning with a straightforward tool induction, you’ll then learn to measure and mark things accurately, cut a simple wooden shelf to size, hang brackets, and more. Along the way, you’ll discover how to attach a variety of things to different wall types, and when you’re done have the knowledge and confidence to tackle wall hanging projects in the comfort of your own home.

Lots of practical training using the MIG welding process, with overview of alternative systems such as TIG, Stick (arc) welding and Gas welding. The course takes you through various welding techniques, from preparation, though cutting, angle grinder use, safety to giving you the basic skills to be flexible and competent in building welded structures, whether artistic and decorative or repair based projects.

Develop your practical welding skills beyond the basics, and explore the designing process while working on a custom project of your own choosing. Participants will further develop welding skills while learn how to draft a welding design and cutting list, choosing the right material, and taking a project from concept to complete. While some basic designs will be provided as guidance, you will be supported to design and your own unique project. This course is perfect for those who have completed an Introduction to Welding, or have previous welding experience and are ready for the next stage of their journey.

This course is designed to be an introduction to woodworking for those that have always wanted to give it a try, and not had the time or space. Participants will get an introduction to using woodworking tools, carpentry techniques and gain skills and confidence in a workshop setting.

Learn to use a range of traditional hand tools and techniques to complete the project, including the carving knife, draw knife, bench plane, saw, tenon cutter, auger, brace and bit. You will learn how to form a round wedge tenon, make splayed legs and dress and shape a seat.

Designed for beginners, this course takes you through the first steps of furniture design and construction while working with designer/maker James of Birbeck’s Woodwork. Participants will work from a custom design to create multifunctional piece of furniture that can be used as an indoor/outdoor table or stool for your home while you gain confidence around woodworking techniques, tools and machinery – all which you can use to plan your next project solo. All materials for the table are included.

Learn how to sew double-sided flat-felled seams to create a beautiful window dressing with a subtle, glowing, stained glass effect. This patchworking technique traditionally found in Korean Pojagi textiles works best with linens, light cottons or translucent fabrics to allow light to pass through the piece whilst highlighting the structure created by double-sided seams. Textile tutor Lucy of Dora Studio will guide you through the process to mindfully make your own uniquely formed composition over 4 evenings. You’ll plan the layout of your design, experiment with colour, transparency and composition, and construct your curtain before choosing either a tab-top or pole-sleeve hanging finish. Along the way, you’ll build confidence using a sewing machine while learning practical techniques that can be applied to future patchwork and garment-making projects.

EOW’s textiles tutor Nicola will guide you through the process, illustrating ways the laser cutter can assist with sewing projects, saving time and effort in accurately cutting pattern pieces. The class provides a brief overview of basic laser cutting software, offers a chance to draw and cut simple shapes, as well as discussing other, more advanced techniques that can be learned with future study.

The class covers basic domestic sewing machine skills, putting into practice these simple techniques to finish your project. Take home the finished piece, ready to fill with your most essential sewing tools. Suitable for beginner and novice sewers, and those with no prior laser-cutting experience. Fabrics and threads will be provided.

Across two evenings (Tuesdays) or in one 4 hour block (Thursdays), this short course covers a number of essential sewing techniques and tips for beginner and novice sewers. Try each one and complete a reference sampler with examples of each technique. A great place to start, gain skills and confidence to apply to your future projects.

Join Angela, designer and maker behind Earlob, for a creative laser cutting workshop to create an acrylic lamp! Working from your own drawing you will get the chance to use tracing software and laser cutting equipment to transform your drawings into files that can then be cut or engraved onto acrylic board. Perfect for total beginners this workshop is designed to give you a first look at what you can create with laser cutting.

Join experienced designer maker Angela of Earlob, who will guide you through every step of the process, from navigating software to create vector artwork – to working safely with equipment – and exploring different materials and common construction techniques.

Then come join our new woodworking week-long workshop! Specially tailored for those who have completed any introductory EOW woodworking course, or those with prior woodworking experience – this week-long workshop will see you sharpen your design and woodworking skills working alongside designer/maker James, of Birbeck’s Woodwork.

Participants will work from a custom design to create a small table all while gaining confidence in workshop machinery and tools, and the ability to plan future projects solo.
