Woodturning Lathe Introduction | 2nd & 9th December, 18:30 – 20:30

£160.00

2 week course: Wednesday evenings | 18:30 – 20:30

Join our relaxed, hands-on woodturning workshops to get started with the basics of lathe turning to create a wooden candlestick or spurtle. Over two consecutive evening sessions, you will be guided by tutor Jonny Taylor of Widden to learn the basics of woodturning on the lathe.

Create a wooden candlestick or spurtle whilst developing skills and confidence on the lathe. These small group sessions are suitable for total beginners. Learn safe working practices, how to prepare blanks for turning, using and sharpening tools, basic spindle turning, refining and finishing your piece. This introduction will provide you with all the skills needed to book in to use the lathes as a pay-as-you-go member.

The first session will introduce participants to the lathe, the tools and the basic principles of safe and controlled woodturning. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing good workshop habits, including always stopping the lathe before making adjustments. The second session will focus on refining and completing the candlestick or spurtle. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own shape and profile within the project, allowing for individual creativity and different levels of experience.

Across the 2 evenings you will gain:

  •   An understanding of basic lathe safety
  •   An introduction to woodturning tools and their uses
  •   Basic tool sharpening skills
  •   Experience in safely mounting timber
  •   Fundamental spindle-turning skills
  •   Experience shaping and refining a turned object
  •   An understanding of sanding and finishing
  •   A completed a wooden object to take home
  •   Greater confidence working independently at the lathe

The October course will focus on turning a wooden candlestick, followed by a spurtle-making course in December. Participants are welcome to take either course individually, or join both to build their confidence and develop their turning skills further. For participants attending both, the second workshop will provide an opportunity to reinforce the fundamentals while introducing new techniques and greater freedom in shaping and design.
