EOW will once again open its workshop doors to showcase local artists and makers in our third annual Makers Market. Get some holiday shopping done, with no worries about delivery delays, all while supporting local artists and makers.

Kirsty Dalton Designs

Primitive is a line of wooden works produced by Scottish designer Kirsty Dalton. Each piece is individually handcrafted from various cuts of natural wood, shaped and then burnt freehand, using a process called pyrography. This approach complements the form and unique characteristics of this beautiful medium. The wood is sourced locally in Scotland and the artist primarily uses sycamore; its natural light and blond appearance accentuate the burnt in-detail.

Utilising traditional methods of woodturning and hand carving, Dalton’s approach is purely instinctive; or primitive; inspired by nature, with a focus on bold shapes merged with intricate detail, aiming to capture the essence of prehistoric art combined with more contemporary ornamentation.

Knot Unknot

Knot Unknot is the brand name of Madeleine Shepherd, an interdisciplinary artist with an interest in textiles, science, maths and science fiction. Her work ranges from collaborative art installations and writing projects (such as Botanica Mathematica and Alba ad Astra) to the fashion accessories she’s bringing to the EOW Makers Market. She is currently working on a set of knitted wall hangings commemorating the early space race and a range of mathematically-inspired knit fabrics for accessories and soft furnishings. These fabrics are created in her Coburg House studio on a vintage, electronic knitting machine which has been hacked to attach to a laptop computer.

Earlier this year, Madeleine was awarded a Connected Innovators grant by Creative Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and Creative Edinburgh for data-driven development in the creative industries. This will enable her to research the intersection of traditional and generative design in knitting and to upgrade her studio equipment for a new collection of algorithmic knitting for 2022.

Katie Charleson

Katie Charleson is a screen printed homewares designer committed to creating sumptuous, unique textiles. Always leading the design process with colour, her prints create cushions, quilts and interior objects that are modern, bright and desirable.

Katie works exclusively with natural fibres from ethical sources and uses organic fabrics where possible. Many works embrace upcycling and make use of remnants, off cuts and archival fabrics. She only uses water based inks in her production, and is consciously introducing natural dyes while educating herself on the most environmentally positive way to continue creating textile work.

All of Katie’s products and commissions are hand dyed, hand printed and hand stitched in her Edinburgh Studio. If product manufacture does need to be outsourced, then it is always kept local.

Katie has spent the start of 2021 setting up a textile print space in Edinburgh Open Workshop alongside fellow printer Laura Richmond, where they will begin offering print and textile craft workshops in the summer.

Laura Williams Illustrations

A Scottish illustrator based in Edinburgh, who explores through line, dot and pattern. Inspired by naturally found objects and small wildlife in and around the local area.

Made By Kelly O

Kelly O creates upcycled accessories from plastic carrier bags, helping to reduce plastic pollution. Items include zip pouches, wallets, tote bags, and laptop sleeves.

Alan Lennon

Alan is a multi disciplinary artist working in a variety of mediums: oil on canvas, stone/clay sculpture and traditional photomontage. They exhibit regularly and have a Studio/Gallery in Leith – Studio 52. Their unique photomontage artwork is originally created using only traditional cut and paste techniques – scissors, glue and plenty patience! No computer involvement and using only found imagery.

Pearl Moss Press

Pearl Moss Press is a small press run by artists Alix Villanueva and Alex Hackett, creating hand-bound artist books, publications and pamphlets.

The press explores entanglements between art and the natural world, finding the intimate within the landscape, unpacking multispecies relationships and exploring what it means to be human at the age of the Anthropocene.

In keeping with our ecological interests, we adopt a ‘scavenger’ ethos, working with found and repurposed materials and aligning ourselves to a zero-waste approach.

Thyme James

Thyme James is a print-maker, specialising in relief and screen printing. Her work is figurative, bold, and colourful, focusing strongly on the female form.

Caroline Mackenzie Design

I am a textile artist based in the Scottish Borders.

I re-cycle old wool jumpers which I use as fabric for my many creations.

All my work is sewn by hand.

Birbeck's Woodwork

I am driven towards simple geometric design, with the ethos being Unique Designs Made Simple. I create one-offs, limited runs and small batches of work. I’m a local printmaker and my work is inspired by nature, insects, animals and plants. I also hand print textiles and clothing. I use sustainable materials and compostable/ recyclable packaging.

Furniture Makers, Restoration & Upholstery

Becka and Kirsty design and make one-off pieces of furniture and homeware, with an emphasis on using reclaimed materials. Every piece is hand made in their residents’ space at the Edinburgh Open Workshop where they are more than happy for visitors to pop by and see what they’re up to. Diana Savova

Nature and magic realism are where I often draw inspiration for my current paintings, employing watercolour, golden leaves, oil and acrylic. I am going to sell miniature originals as small painting and jewellery and high quality Giclee prints of my art works.
